Konfirmationspredigt 2026
Trust me./Es ist wirklich so, glaubt mir.
Zusage – Das Versprechen gilt
Amen.
English Version
Dear family, dear congregation! What a day, confirmands – am I right?
Here you are, all dressed up and glowing, after so many Saturday sessions and shared experiences.
You've worked for this, you've looked forward to this. You've earned it.
On Friday we met together as a group for the last time. We prepared, and we said our first goodbyes. We packed our suitcase – symbolically speaking. It's right up here at the front.
A suitcase full of shared discoveries and experiences.
Lots of discussion and conversation with the Bible, thoughts about Jesus, creation, prayer, the Ten Commandments, church services, an amazing retreat, lots of prayers – and, as I've been told, perhaps one too many songs. Some of it you found boring, some of it good, some interesting, some less so – but you stuck with it. For me, it's been a wonderful time.
I hope, all in all, it has been for you too.
We hope it's good provisions and solid equipment for whatever lies ahead on your journey.
I also packed your Creed in there. We'll say it together later.
Because today is the day you make your decision: Yes, I want to belong to God.
Yes, I want to belong to God's community and stay and grow in the Christian faith.
You haven't answered your confirmation question yet.
The door is open – you could still make a run for it if you wanted….
No, you'd better stay. Otherwise there might not be a festive dinner waiting for you later.
Your journey has brought you here today. With all your questions, doubts, ideas, dreams and wishes.
And here is exactly where you belong.
The Image – The Rough Seas of Life
Yes, I can see some enthusiastic nodding – very good… But that's not always so obvious in life. Finding our place, where we belong or where we want to go – that's often something we have to figure out first. And that's not always easy. It takes orientation.
"The rough seas of life" – as people sometimes say. A fitting image, I think. The sea and the ocean with its beauty but also its wildness. Its dangers but also its calm. Life as a voyage across the ocean of time. Let's picture that for a moment. And to help us do that, I've decorated the pulpit a little.
So let's look through the binoculars at all the straits and shallows you've already sailed through.
There's the coral reef of past embarrassments – let's sail past that quickly….
And there's Crush Cove, very hidden… not much going on there yet…
And there it is: your childhood and youth.
Looking Back – Where You Come From
Shallow, warm waters – like a baby pool. Your parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles, godparents – they were there for you in these waters of life. They walked alongside you, held the steering wheel of your life for you and set the course. They guided your first steps, dried many tears, and way back when – changed far more nappies. As you explored your first coves they were right there beside you, and slowly let you out into the open sea – but with armbands at first. And you grew bigger.
Nursery, balance bike, bicycle, primary school, sports clubs, music lessons, a different sport, a different instrument, summer camp, secondary school, endless lists of books and supplies – a long list that could go on much longer. All of it for you, dear confirmands, you young deckands.
But wait – this is your boat, so shouldn't you be the one holding the wheel?
And you were. More and more. Because with the years you became more independent. You set your own sails, chose your own course, took the wheel more and more into your own hands. From the shallow waters of childhood we've arrived at the here and now – in what I'd call the strait of youth, the strait of puberty. It's the time, dear confirmands, when your crew – made up of your loved ones, especially your parents – somehow became so difficult. Insubordination, mutiny, you might call it. Your crew would probably put it the other way around.
And it's also a time full of shallows, fierce storms and whirlpools – when the first heartbreak hits, when girls or boys become somehow interesting but also somehow still a bit weird, and you become more and more your own person. A time that can feel like a shark tank sometimes – with social media, bullying and hate.
But also a time when you feel like the greatest pirates on the seven seas, living your best life.
And we too sailed together as a crew during our confirmation time. From the moment you came on board, all the way to today and your confirmation. It's been great having you on board and journeying together.
Looking Ahead – The Open Sea Awaits
The time of your youth is a time when sometimes everything clicks and you feel like a fish in water.
And sometimes like a lonely whale on a sandbank, who just wants some peace and quiet – or sometimes desperately needs a hug.
Calm and storm, sunshine and rain – they sit very close together.
And so much still lies ahead of you. Once you're out of the strait of puberty, all kinds of new waters await. The open sea. The wide horizon. Apprenticeships, university, a gap year, time abroad. You take on more and more command on the bridge of your very own ship. You hold the wheel more and more firmly in your hands.
That's not always easy. Not for you, and not for your loved ones, who in the not too distant future will be standing at a harbour, airport or train station, letting you go out into the big wide world as you set sail for the future. And there will be times when you don't know which way to go. When the fog is thick and the channel is unclear.
Orientation – Compass, Steering Wheel and Lighthouse
What can give you guidance and help in those moments? First of all, everything you've learned on your journey so far. What your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles and godparents have taught you.
Not just practical life skills, but values, ideas of right and wrong, a sense of how life works. How to navigate a world that is often unfamiliar.
Then there are your friends, people from clubs, groups, orchestras and choirs – and not least your school. Because some of what you learn there really does come in handy. Trust me.
All of that is like a compass – it can point the way for what lies ahead. And the beautiful thing about a compass: it always points north. No matter how much the ship rocks. No matter how fierce the storm. The needle may tremble, but it finds its way back. So when everything around you starts to shake – your values, what your loved ones have given you, that remains. That is your north.
And then there's the steering wheel in your hands. It stands for freedom and responsibility at once. You set the course. But – and this matters – a steering wheel alone won't get you anywhere. Even the most experienced captain fights with the storm sometimes. The art isn't avoiding the storm. The art is steering well. And knowing: I am not alone on the bridge. And that brings us to one more thing.
When ships in the old days couldn't find their way at night or in the fog, they looked out for a light. A steady light that doesn't waver and doesn't go out: a lighthouse. You might remember from last year: during the Kirchentag in Hannover, our church tower was lit up from above at night – shining out visibly across the whole city. A church tower as a real lighthouse. A beautiful image that says more than just "pretty lights". It says: here is orientation. Here a light is burning. Look here when you don't know where north is.
And that is what church and community can be for you: a place that shines. A place you can turn to when the seas get rough. A place where you can find belonging and something to hold on to.
The Gift – Compass and Bible Verse
And as a visible sign – a reminder of this day and of your confirmation journey – please reach under your chair now and open the black box. There you have a little steering wheel with a compass in the centre – and on the back, a verse from the first book of Moses, chapter 28: "God is with you and will watch over you wherever you go."
This verse carries an enormous promise. And it has a particular context I don't want to keep from you: Jacob, the one this verse is spoken to, is on the run. He's cheated his brother Esau, he's fleeing, sleeping outside on a hard stone – completely alone, in the dark, with no plan. And it's precisely in that moment, on the run, that he receives this promise.
God doesn't say: "If you do everything right, I'll be there." He doesn't say: "If you never lose your course." He simply says: "I am with you. Wherever you go."
That's what makes this verse so powerful. It doesn't only count when everything is going smoothly. It counts especially when you're on the run. When you don't know where to turn. When the stone beneath your head is hard. God promises: I will always be with you. I am here for you. Like the loving look, the kind word, the warm embrace of a father or a mother – so God stays with you too. In the storm, on the sunny shore, in the fog, on the open sea.
The Promise – It Stands Forever
And everything you've taken from your confirmation time stays with you too: new friendships and companions for the road. The Ten Commandments, Psalm 23, how to pray, what you can pray. What forgiveness, hope, love and faith are really all about. Some of it you won't need straight away. Some of it maybe never. But some of it – perhaps exactly when you least expect it. Because of course you hold the wheel firmly in your hands. But where north, east, south and west are – that is fixed, and it's not in your hands. Straits and storms won't clear away just because you want them to. But when you have to go through them, you can be sure: you don't go alone. God goes with you.
His light shines for you. His light shines for all of us. Keep looking. Stay curious, questioning, courageous. Keep looking – sometimes a little longer.
Just as you promise today in your confirmation to walk on with God – so God promises you something too, and already did so at your baptism: he walks on with you. Whatever waters you find yourself in.
"God is with you and will watch over you wherever you go" – that is true always. Yesterday, today and tomorrow. And even if there comes a time, in a few years – maybe just for a season – when none of this means much to you: his promise remains. Because whatever the seas of your life look like – calm or wild:
He is your anchor in the rough sea.
Amen.
